Visiting Scholars

Applicant Information

Visiting scholars are entitled to the following: full library privileges at the various campus libraries and manuscripts collections; access to the University gymnasium and recreational facilities (fees may apply); eligibility to apply for a parking permit and office space (if available). In addition, Center staff will aid in making introductions with faculty members here at UNC, and in familiarizing Visiting Scholars with University facilities. We regret that we cannot offer our Visiting Scholars any stipend.

The University's visiting scholar requirements state that eligibility for registration as a Visiting Scholar is limited to those who are not on the University payroll as employees in any capacity and are visiting the University under the sponsorship of an academic department or school for the furtherance of scholarly interests.

Visiting Scholars may include faculty members on leaves of absence from another institution of higher learning, postdoctoral fellows, or others who hold a terminal degree in their field and are invited to visit by a University department or school.

The Manuscript Department of the Academic Affairs Library runs a visiting scholar grant initiative that offers stipends to graduate students, faculty, and independent scholars who plan to use the resources available in the Southern Historical Collection for a major research project, including dissertations, theses, articles, and monographs.

When applying, please fill out this form and send it in.
