Grants & Fellowships

The Center supports faculty and student research on innovative topics related to the southern United States with travel grants, summer research stipends, postdoctoral fellowships, and course development awards.  Applicants from all academic disciplines are encouraged to apply.

Graduate Support

McColl Dissertation Year Fellowship in Southern Studies - The McColl Dissertation Year Fellowship provides a year’s funding for a UNC graduate student to complete a doctoral dissertation on a topic related to the southern United States.   (Application deadline: February 4, 2011)

Summer Research Grants  -The Summer Research grants provides financial support for summer research by select UNC graduate students. (Application deadline: February 18, 2011)

Graduate Student Travel Grants - The Center offers UNC-CH graduate students grant support for travel expenses to scholarly conferences.

Post Graduate Support

Postdoctoral Fellowships in Southern Studies - The Center is currently offering two (2) one-year postdoctoral fellowships in the history, culture, or society of the American South. Undergraduate Support

Frances Ferris Hall Fund for Undergraduate Research - The Center for the Center for the Study of the American South announces the establishment of the Frances Hall Ferris Fund to support research by UNC-CH undergraduates on women in the American South. Up to two awards of $500 will be made each spring for use in following year. (Application deadline: April 2010)

Faculty

Faculty Course Development Awards - Course development grants for summer 2010 will be allocated to the American Studies Department for the development of the new Southern Studies undergraduate major. Core Southern Studies faculty are invited to submit proposals for the new gateway and exit courses for the major. Visiting Scholars - Graduate students, faculty, and independent scholars who plan to use the resources available here at the University can apply for affiliate status to support their ongoing work on a major research project.  Projects might include dissertations, articles, and monographs.
